Our family was finally united at the soccer match we had anticipated for months... and the results on the pitch were less than we hoped. Visiting Japan carved up the U.S. during this international friendly between U-17 squads. In fact, these four soccer observers left their inaugural visit to the beautifully designed CPKC Stadium with no doubt that one side was superior... and it wasn't our beloved red, white, and blue. An overcast and cool (but not cold) day to watch soccer, featuring one of the all-time greats, Megan Rapinoe... Dynamite!!! Three NWSL matches... three times we were forced to watch the Chicago Red Stars... With our daughter's and Elizabeth's favorite soccer player of all time (Megan Rapinoe) playing and our growing disdain for the Red Stars, we were locked in as OL Reign fans from the start. Ah... an excellent use for an American football stadium... a fútbol match! After taking in the Menace match, we were left wondering why it took us so long to attend. The side was founded in 1994 and has won two championships since, and the supporters are as fervent as any we have encountered thus far. I have no idea what Tads is doing here... and my best bet is Tads doesn't know either. The W/W crew has seen Red Stars take the pitch twice, and both times, we have cheered against them… Is this side quickly becoming our least favorite in the NWSL? P urchasing general admission tickets for the match on StubHub unknowingly placed us in the "Supporters” area (which forbids opposing team colors). This pretty much locked us into rooting for Sporting KC. We didn't mind as the atmosphere was incredible. We started the match with four of these lightsabers... only one survived the night. We didn’t have a particular love for either of the two teams in this match, but being a guest in Colorado Springs, we made a choice to become a member of the Switchbacks fan base for an evening. We dove into following the NWSL with the championship match, and we were thoroughly hooked after this one! Our interest in seeing Washington Spirit phenom Trinity Rodman play live tilted our allegiance in their favor, but sitting among the Chicago Red Stars fans and hearing them piss and moan all match pushed us from mostly indifferent to passionate Spirit fans pretty quickly.
